The new Shinedown CD is... absolutely amazing. The Sound of Madness exceeded what I thought this band was capable of, and since Leave a Whisper I had VERY high expectations for this band (which were somewhat disappointed by the overly radio-friendly Us and Them).Where Shinedown was heavy in Leave a Whisper, they are devastatingly driven in The Sound of Madness. Where they had been beautiful and pensive they are now excruciatingly beautiful.Listening to the song, Devour, I can't help but think they may have learned a thing or two from Disturbed on rhythm, meter, tempo, and just overall violence of action. And the truly great thing is that they lost none of their old personality. This is still Shinedown, but Now They're Pissed! They've still got that trick of theirs where they change key mid-melody, and now it's even more surprising-yet-seamless than ever.I really believe that in order to make this album happen the band members had to develop personally in a deep way. You can tell they've taken a much more objective view of life than they had before (they even have a little tough love for their "loner" fans in their title track), and it seems they've found whatever it is they lost in Us and Them. They seem to have really found themselves in big way, and I think they've grown up a lot, both personally and as a band. But the bottom line is that The Sound of Madness is one of the best metal albums ever produced, and the members of Shinedown have reason to feel really good about themselves right now.Long live Shinedown!
